Bio: Shelton is the newly appointed Senior Vice President of Internet2, having joined the university owned research and education network after serving six years Associate Vice Chancellor and CIO at the University of CA, Berkeley.  Prior to joining Cal in 2003, Waggener spent the previous decade in senior technology positions in the private sector at leading technology firms including serving as CIO of InterNetworking Systems, a division of Lucent Technologies; Director of IT for Octel Communications; and Senior Director of IT Infrastructure for Sybase.  Waggener has at the center of many community lead activities within higher education including serving on the board of the Kuali Foundation and the formation of the NET+ cloud service division of Internet2.

  

Description: The "Cloud" is not a passing fad, nor simply a place to store music and photos on the 'net.  For Research Universities, it represents the evolution of computing that our community has been at the forefront of for a generation: using large instrumentation (computing) across many institutions.  However for all of history and progress in using shared resources, higher education is now at risk of falling behind in adoption of the very computing paradigm we pioneered.  Its critical that R1's regain their lead in shared computing by blending the now readily available commercial cloud options with our culture of innovation and local development.  Higher education IT is at a crossroads: attempt to maintain the status quo and serve as a value added control point for the adoption of these new services or develop new models for engagement with cloud services which requires a complete transformation of current approaches in the way IT plans, operates, resources, and engages with their campus community regarding technology deployment.  Failure to embrace these changes risks not just the relevance of IT, but the overall competitiveness of US research universities at a time where the entire higher education model is being disrupted by technology driven advances in student engagement.
