Distance Education Room Design That Walks The Dog

Primary Presenter: Albert Powell

Organization: Colorado State University

Role: Director, Learning Technologies

Track: Presentation

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: Distance education has many formats, but both lecture capture and web-based videoconferencing are gaining favor among faculty. CSU OnlinePlus has created a room design which allows for both to take place, and no dedicated videoconferencing equipment is required since this design uses web delivery to provide all students with access via standard web browser. Interactive videoconferencing uses only the web and software. Come learn about how you can expand your options in distance class delivery.

Bio: Dr. Powell leads the Learning Technology Unit in CSU OnlinePlus, where he researches and tests distance teaching technologies and works with other CSU units to design and equip classrooms with technologies which serve both campus and distance students. He has professional experience in commercial broadcasting and 32 years of experience in higher education in a variety of electronic media and distance education related roles. In the 1980's he led Washington State University's College of Agriculture in adopting videotape technology, and he led Texas A&M University in production of satellite teleconferencing during the 80's and 90's.

Description: Are you wondering how distance classrooms work? Curious about those cameras, microphones and what they do? CSU has developed a classroom design which allows capturing lectures for both campus and distance students. The recordings provide capture of camera, audio and computer screen, and the same design also allows live web videoconferencing. This presentation walks you through the design using laymen's terms, explains the reasons for the design, and illustrates the functions and capabilities that it provides. Short samples of recorded classes will be shown to illustrate the differences in how lecture capture and videoconference classes are conducted. In this presentation, actual comprehensible English will be used rather than jargon and techno-speak.
