Description: Lowering the cost of textbook materials is of paramount importance to the nation's colleges and universities. This session will provide participants with an example of how to one University rapidly scaled the development of a statistics lab using OER content across multiple devices (laptop, tablets, smart phones) in under six months at nominal cost. SmartLab is a Statistics Primer - a compilation of text based and interactive web-based OER course materials for the remediation of students. Developed internally at the Rockies and exclusively for our students, course materials include textbooks and essential readings; audio and video programs; interactive exercises; and supplements organized in a purposeful way to support the learning process. Materials are displayed in a proprietary, browser-based reader through Bridgepoint's Constellation platform and integrated into the University's learning management system. Students may access the materials on their computers or mobile devices, such as iPhone, Kindle and iPad. Students are free to use their course materials in any way they wish. They can listen to the audio versions, download to multiple devices, print without restriction, keep for future reference or share with colleagues. This session will provide participants with an example of how to one University rapidly scaled the development of a statistics lab using OER content across multiple devices (laptop, tablets, smart phones) in under six months at nominal cost. Participants will learn how to: a) Develop a cost model to assess the feasibility of OER customization b) Identify processes for customization of OER content; c) Understand how to assemble resources to rapidly scale the distribution of OER content to students across multiple devices and d) Evaluate data to assess learning outcomes associated with the deployment of free content.
