Abstract: This presentation will explore how teachers can encourage and support effective collaborative learning using a variety of technology tools. Such tools as VoiceThread, PeerMark, Google Moderator, Google Plus, YouTube, Wikis and Twitter will be discussed and demonstrated.

 

Bio: Viktoriya works as an Academic Technology Consultant for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In addition to consulting faculty on an array of instructional technologies, she works on projects to develop, evaluate, and continually enhance academic technology services throughout the College of Arts and Sciences. Viktoriya’s professional background also includes planning and organizing faculty development programs and conducting research projects on the impact of technology on teaching and learning. She has an M.S. in Education Management and M.Ed. in College Student Services Administration.

 

Description: Collaborative learning refers to instructional method in which students learn with and from each other. Engaging in collaborative learning activities helps students enhance their interaction skills, improve critical thinking skills, and develop responsibility for learning. Using technology tools to implement collaborative learning could make logistics of the process much easier for both instructors and students. In addition, technology allows instructors to use many interesting frameworks and formats for collaborative learning activities and to provide students with favorable environment for collaboration. The following technology-enriched collaborative learning activities will be discussed and demonstrated: - Using VoiceThread to collaborate, respond, and reflect on a projects - Using Wikis and Google docs for collaborative writing - Using Twitter and Google Moderator for sharing ideas and resources - Using Facebook and Google Plus for building collaborative learning community - Using YouTube as a platform for group video projects - Using PeerMark for peer review While collaborative learning could be very beneficial to students, managing collaborating learning activities could be like herding cats. This presentation will provide the participants with strategies and tips for organizing and managing collaborative learning. We will look at such management aspects as assigning students into groups, providing students with clear guidelines, and grading collaborative. The audience will be encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas and experiences using online collaborative tools as well as traditional forms of interaction.
