Increasing Student Engagement with Streamlined Video Delivery Using Kaltura

Primary Presenter: Vicente Augden

Co-Presenters: Nicole Croy and Jennifer Sorensen

Organization: Regis University

Role: Instructional Developer

Track: Technology Round-Up

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: With the pervasiveness of mobile learning, delivering video to multiple devices using one platform is not feasible. After a successful pilot using Kaltura, Regis University has adopted a solution for seamless video delivery to all users. In addition to solving the technical constraints of media delivery, our Kaltura demonstrated the ability for faculty to enhance student learning through the use of video.

Bio: My primary responsibility is providing faculty with training, support and instructional pedagogical assistance in successfully delivery of blended and online courses in one-on-one sessions. I evaluate that learning activities and assessments are designed to meet course objectives to ensure students have a significant learning experience. I am experienced providing innovative and interactive materials to design and develop online courses utilizing educational resources and technologies. I use a variety of computer software such as Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Final cut studio, Premiere, captivate, and Camtasia to develop and maintain instructional materials and support resources.

Description: With what seems like the introduction of a new device every day, how is it possible to assure flawless media delivery to all? Utilizing the technology of Kaltura, we are able to provide our faculty and students access to educational and instructional videos on PCs, Macs, and mobile devices with minimal effort.

Features:

  • Utilizing HTML5 – With the obstacle of Adobe Flash not available on iOS devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, Kaltura utilizes HTML5 technology to deliver video to these types of devices.

  • Enhance & Engage – With features such as customizable video players and Playlists, Kaltura enhances the video experience for users. The integration of transcription and closed captioning increases accessibility of the media and provides an additional layer of usability.

  • Flexibility & Ease – Media placed in Kaltura can be easily embedded into any webpage or integrated in a learning management system.

  • Collaboration – The ease of use of Kaltura sparks areas of collaboration for faculty and students that may not have the technical knowledge of video production.

Faculty Perspective:

The objective of creating videos with Kaltura was to provide consistency in student learning and evaluation in the nursing skills lab. Through the use of video and accompanying checklists, each student and faculty are provided clear expectations for consistent demonstration and evaluation of skill competence.
Prior to the use of videos through Kaltura, feedback from nursing students confirmed inefficient use of student practice time, lack of consistent teaching methods, and inconsistent competency evaluation of nursing skills. Current student feedback confirms the use of videos through Kaltura has provided an efficient, effective method of teaching and learning by increasing student practice time in skills lab as well as the achievement of consistent demonstration and evaluation of skill competence.
