Creating Heroes & Saving the World: Gamifying Classrooms!

Primary Presenter: Aaron Perrell

Organization: Wyoming Distance Learning Center

Role: Instructional Technology Educational Specialist

Track: Hands-On Workshop

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at something, and many students spend much more time than than playing video games. So how can use video games as learning environments? And how can you transform your learning environment(s) to have the same captivating nature as a video game? In this talk I will share a few practical and simple methods for gamifying your classroom that your students will love!

Bio: I worked for nearly six years at the University of Wyoming as an Apple Tech doing, among other things, Apple Training. I've spent the last two years working at the Wyoming Distance Learning Center as a Instructional Technology Educational Specialist building learning spaces and helping schools, pro-dev groups, and many state entities integrate new technologies into classes and trainings. It's been busy, but I've been fortunate enough to help lead the charge in bringing Wyomings training and educational opportunities up to date, and to the web. I would love the chance to bring my technical and educational experience to COLTT!

Description: In this session I will give an overview of gamification followed with research, resources, and a bit of inspiration, as we dive into how the power of games can be leveraged by teachers easily and effectively! The workshop will begin with simple steps that will allow any teacher to easily integrate game elements into a class and increase student engagement! We will talk about what technologies are available (including some great free tools!), how they can best be used in a classroom without causing disruption, and dispel a few game related myths while we're at it. Technology in the classroom is often intimidating, a fact that is especially true for game technology. However, there's no reason to fear it! Together we can explore what games and game mechanics have to offer. And if technology isn't your cup of tea I will discuss no-tech solutions to gamifying your classroom as we go! Finally, I'll give a few examples of the gamification techniques I've used in my classes, and how any teacher can use those same techniques in their own classes. Games don't have to be a distraction in the classroom, and by the end of this session you'll know why, and how, you can embrace gamification and interactive media to truly engage your students and bring your classroom to life!
