How to Create Your Own e-Learning Website

Abstract: I have spent the past year developing and fine-tuning a new online e-learning website that involved many iterations, twists, and turns. I will share my experiences (painful and fun) developing a robust member-based learning platform using Wordpress, Buddypress, and various plugins. You will learn the basic components needed to create your own online e-learning site including choosing a domain name, finding a server host, installing Wordpress/Buddypress, and selecting just the right plugins for your needs.

 

Bio: Michele has extensive experience as a health educator, web designer, and health and wellness researcher. Michele’s doctoral and subsequent professional development has focused on interactive learning and problem-based learning techniques targeting the adult learner. She has more than 15 years’ experience as a health sciences instructor teaching both graduate and undergraduate level courses at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Georgia State University, and Emory University. Michele has most recently focused her work on new, immerging e-learning training modalities that facilitate and enhance the adult learning experience.

 

Description: Presentation Objectives: Provide participants a working understanding of how to create an e-learning web site of their own from scratch. Presentation Outline: This session is meant for individuals with a working knowledge of Wordpress including its basic components such as posts, pages, categories, and media library. 1. Review the basic components needed to design and build a website using Wordpress website software. a. Domain name b. Hosting service 2. Themes 101 – participants will perform their own theme search and we will review what they have found a. What is a Wordpress “theme” b. Considerations when selecting themes c. How to choose the one that best fits your needs 3. Plugins 101 – participants will perform their own plugin search and we will review what they have found. a. What is a Wordpress “plugin” b. Considerations when selecting plugins c. What is a widget? 4. Buddypress 101 – participants will view and sample a Buddypress installation. a. What is Buddypress b. Why use it? Is it for everyone? c. Essential Buddypress components and plugins 5. Making your site member-only (hiding and showing selective content) – participants will log into a sample site that illustrates hidden versus viewable content based on the member’s login ID. a. What a basic Wordpress installation can and cannot do to provide member-based functionality. b. Review “member” plugins 6. Putting it all together – participants will view a working model of a live member-based e-learning website designed using Wordpress, Buddypress, and selected plugins. Expected Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Describe core elements needed to set up a hosted website. 2. Discuss key components to consider when building a member-based Wordpress website that can be used for e-learning. 3. Realize an example of a Wordpress/Buddypress website that provides students and faculty a robust information-sharing learning experience.
