Conducting Web Seminars in F2F Classes

Abstract: Conducting a web seminar in the F2F classrooms where each student has access to a computer permits the instructor to hand off control of the class tutorial (example - Excel case problem) to each student. Employing an overhead projector, all students may watch the work of the 'active' student as they complete a portion of the tutorial. Students may log in remotely if necessary, and the entire session can be recorded.

 

Bio: Steven Rothenberg has been teaching online and F2F classes at Arapahoe Community College for 6 years, on top of 30 years in IT, which was in turn preceded by 8 years in the high school classroom. Rothenberg has developed a number of innovative teaching methodologies based on the latest technological innovations and in particular, a methodology using a web seminar collaborative tool (Cisco's Webex) that works as well for face 2 face as for online classes. Having masters degrees in both Education and Computer Information Systems, he has combined his training and background to deliver a quality educational experience to his students

 

Description: The objective of the presentation is to have attendees understand how web seminar tools like Webex (or Adobe Connect, etc) can be used in the F2F classroom. These tools enable the instructor to foster interactive participation in each lesson by permitting students to control the lecture from their seats. Students can perform activities like completing case problems or exercises that the instructor would typical control throughout the entire class period. Another objective is to have attendees understand the side benefits, such as making the class available to students not physically in the classroom, recording the session for later viewing by absent students, and permitting the instructor to teach the class from a remote location. The presentation will be a combination of demonstration and hands-on activities. The presentation will be structured as follows: 1. Overview of Cisco Webex 2. Logging into active Webex session 3. Participating in sample class 4. Distributing control of the web session class to attendees 5. Creating breakout rooms and assigning attendees to rooms 6. Recording and viewing the web seminar at its conclusion 7. Discussion side benefits and potential additional uses. 8. Questions and wrap up. At the end of the session, the expectation is that each attendee will feel comfortable in using Webex or similar product to add to their teaching methodologies, and will understand the benefits of this technique to both the instructor and student: - hands on, active rather than passive participation in class lecture - students who cannot make it to class (weather, illness, etc) may participate equally in the class - recorded session permits view or review of the class - instructor may teach class from remote location if necessary.
