A Flipped Classroom: Students as Curators with Storify

* Please bring headphones to this session. Thank you.

Primary Presenter: Sherry Jones

Organization: Community College of Denver

Role: Adjunct Instructor

Track: Hands-On Workshop

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: Design multimodal/multimedia research-based assignments for hybrid and flipped classrooms using Storify, a free curator tool with easy to use features for researching and documenting content such as Hashtag specific Tweets, Flicker and Instagram images, Soundcloud audios and Youtube videos. Students from my hybrid course complete weekly Storify research projects, and present their findings in front of the classroom. Attend this presentation to learn how to turn your students into enthusiastic researchers, journalists and presenters!

Bio: Sherry Jones, an English Composition Instructor and Ed-Tech Trainer for CC Denver, has designed effective F2F and hybrid courses by integrating educational technology, flipped classroom model, blended learning model, multimodal model, and learner-centered model. Sherry has demonstrated methods for effective integration of technology and instruction for multiple venues, including 2011 and 2010 COLTT, 2012 Front Range CC, 2012, 2011 and 2010 Denver Transfer Initiative (DTI), 2012 Teaching and Learning Center, 2011 and 2009 Denver Writing Project Institute, 2009 Faculty Connections Seminar for UC Denver, and several 2008-2012 professional development seminars for CC Denver.

Description: This presentation will demonstrate how to design a multimodal/multimedia research-based assignment that supports a hybrid or flipped classroom model with Storify, a free timeline style curator tool. Storify offers educators several easy to use features for designing multimodal/multimedia assignments, since it allows both technology novices and professionals to create auditorily and visually rich news articles or "stories" without web design skills.  Storify's iPad-like interface also makes the act of curating easy and fun (Storify has just released an iPad app!), and thus keeps students engaged in the research process.

Participants will discover how my students use Storify to give proper credit to sources, write enticing synthesis essays based on research, and become enthusiastic in-class presenters of their weekly projects.  In our flipped classroom, class time is reserved for student-led discussions on evaluating source credibility and learning new information from peer projects.

The expected presentation outcomes are for participants to:

1) Understand Storify's basic features and educational potentials

2) Organize Storify content based on theme or topic

3) Embed Hashtag specific Tweets, Flicker and Instagram images, Soundcloud audios and Youtube videos through Storify's easy drag and drop feature

4) Learn tips on creating engaging in-class exercises with Storify

5) Learn how to teach students to evaluate the credibility and relevance of web sources

6) Consider methods for protecting student online identity and privacy on Storify

7) Study sample assignment and rubric for Storify

8) Visit student Storify project samples

9) Incorporate Storify into learning management systems, such as Desire2Learn (D2L)

10) Embed a Storify page seamlessly into a Blog

11) Recognize other types of Open Access Content that are great for embedding on Storify, such as: Xtranormal, Goanimate, Animoto animations; Infographics and Flicker images; Google Docs; Vimeo, Big Think, and Academic Earth videos; Webcomics; Prezi and Google Slideshows; Learning Objects
