Let Them Be Heard!: Engaging Student Voices

Primary Presenter: Erin Beaver

Organization: Colorado Mountain College

Role: Assistant Professor

Track: Discussion

Level: For Mere Mortals

Abstract: So many communication outlets are available, yet effective communication often eludes us. In this session, participants will learn how to create spaces and design assignments in face-to-face, hybrid, and online classes that foster meaningful conversation using tools such as VoiceThread, Storify, and Google Hangouts.

Bio: Erin Beaver has worked with diverse student populations in a variety of settings: a Lakota/Catholic school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, a youth writing program at Arizona State University, a public university in South Dakota, a private liberal arts college in Ohio, a community college in rural Missouri, and a community college in the mountains of Colorado. One of the first to integrate Palm technology in classes at The University of South Dakota, Beaver has always been eager to harness the power of technology to improve teaching and learning. Since 2007, Beaver has been teaching online and hybrid courses.

Description: Consider those conversations when you were inspired by others’ voices, the discussions where you felt your voice was heard, the talks that caused you to lose track of time. Join this session to engage in conversation about facilitating effective conversations! Through modeling and sharing samples of successful discussions, participants in this session will learn how to engage students’ voices in a variety of educational settings—from the face-to-face classroom to the online classroom, from within a classroom to across classrooms and institutions. During the session, participants will practice using asynchronous tools such as VoiceThread, Storify, and PollEverywhere. We will discuss how best to prepare for and moderate live discussions using Google Hangouts, Big Blue Button, and Blackboard Collaborate. Participants will leave the session with a compilation of Web 2.0 tools, a refined discussion design, and assignments that will inspire student voices.
